Silent Witness Exhibit
October 8 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
History includes many stories and everyone’s story is important. Each story carries with it a lesson. It is for this reason that the Lorain Historical Society is honored to host the “Silent Witness Exhibit” during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. We will be offering viewings of the Genesis House Silent Witness Exhibit at the Carnegie Center located on 329 W. 10th Street in Lorain. This exhibit opens October 4th and will run through October 15th and will be available to view every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm.
This memorial exhibit honors those who have lost their lives to domestic violence. Each life-size silhouette represents a real victim of domestic violence in Lorain County. Each figure represents a woman who once lived, worked, had neighbors, friends, and family, children- whose life ended violently at the hands of an intimate partner. The organization called these figures the Silent Witnesses.
Inspired by the impact of the Exhibit on many lives, a few of the project supporters came together in the early 1990’s with the determination to create a larger goal, namely the formation of a national initiative dedicated to the elimination of domestic murders. It was then that a five-part process model evolved starting with the creation of Silent Witness Exhibits in all 50 states. 800 Silent Witnesses have been created representing women who were killed as a result of domestic violence in seventeen states. In 1997 all fifty states had joined the initiative.
Through this exhibit, Genesis House is committed to break the silence that often goes with domestic violence and provide awareness in the community of their services to victims of domestic violence and that there is help there for those living in violent or abusive situations.
