Harriet Root: A Woman Ahead of Her Time

Join us for David Hibbard’s presentation as he explores the life of his Great Aunt Harriet Root. Dave is one of the last survivors of the Root family branch going back to William H. Root (1803-1889).
Harriett Root was born in Elyria in 1885, and dedicated her life of unselfish service to her community. While attending Wellesley College in Boston, she became interested in helping immigrants that arrived to the United States, and began her charity work in Lorain shortly after her college graduation in 1907.Her community service began with a sewing class for daughters of steel workers in South Lorain, continued with a social service agency for the underprivileged, and she eventually organized war-related social services in France, Australia, and the United States.
Several photos, along with newspaper and magazine articles, and materials from Harriet’s estate will be available for viewing. Dave will be available for questions following his presentation.
