Step into the personal story of Technical Sergeant Joe Girz, a Lorain native who flew 57 combat missions during World War II as a Radio Operator–Waist Gunner aboard B-26 Martin Marauder bombers. Stationed in Sardinia, Corsica, and Dijon, France between 1944 and 1945, Girz and his crew carried out critical bombing missions across Italy, France, and Germany in support of Allied forces.


Drawing from a meticulously kept personal mission log, this presentation brings Joe Girz’s wartime experiences to life. Through firsthand accounts, archival research, and newly uncovered military records—including mission reports, crew lists, and bombing photography—this program weaves one airman’s story into the broader narrative of the European and Mediterranean campaigns of World War II.
